stetig aufbegehren
(constant rebellion)

Finissage/Conversation with the Artist, with Anna Witt and Andreas Schlaegel:
Sunday, May 8th, 2011, 6:00pm and presentation of publication of Anna Witt, Werke 2002 – 2011

The video works of Anna Witt are based on actions, confronting the viewer with images. At times, it is the artist herself whom we encounter in performance. Other times, it is “foreign” people whom she incites to engage in a confrontation with their surroundings and the political views prevalent there. Her works display “simple”, familiar activities and require the viewer to continually review his or her own position. With a candid interest in others, Anna Witt creates often-playful situations that allow for a communal interaction. Her video works are based, for the most part, on performances intruding upon the public sphere, as in the case of her work, Kontakte (contacts). Here, she depicts the frisking of people by airport security agents, while transferring the action to the public arena of a railway station hall. Witt describes the fundamentals of her method as follows: “I put an action space at people’s disposal, which they can shape any way they like, themselves.” In many cases, the speaking activities of the participating “cast members” augment the physical interactions. Both non-verbal and verbal articulations in Witt’s works open up thinking spaces involving fundamental new definitions of the way we live together in society.

Apart from her show at the exhibition space of Magazin4, where six of her works are merged in a display created especially for Bregenz, Anna Witt will also present a brand new work specifically developed for Bregenz, at the historical Martinsturm.

The exhibition is a cooperative project with Kunsthalle Ravensburg, and is being curated by Jörg van den Berg. It marks the conclusion of a three-year period during which the artist was being funded by the Columbus Art Foundation. During the closing event of the exhibition, a comprehensive catalogue will be presented, documenting all of the artist’s previously realised works.
Alongside the exhibition stetig aufbegehren, Kunsthalle Ravensburg will be putting up a group show from March 7th to May 13th, 2011, entitled politics - ich.ichs.wir with works by Alexander Kluge, Barbara Köhler, Thomas Locher, Mark Lombard, Jan. J. Schoonhoven, Albrecht Tübke and Anna Witt. This exhibition will open on Saturday March 5th, 2011, at 5:00pm. See also
